Service Disruption Due to Staff Shortage

Student Transportation Bus Route Cancellation Procedure
January 13, 2022

Niagara Student Transportation Services (NSTS) is expecting service disruptions due to staffing shortages when schools return to in-person learning on January 17, 2022. This staffing shortage may result in route delays and cancellations. This is unchartered territory for us in Niagara and we have established the following procedures, similar to the inclement weather procedure, to support communication in this new situation.

Guidance for Transported Families

Parents are encouraged to make a plan in the event their child’s bus route is cancelled for the day or for multiple days.

A route that is cancelled in the morning, will be cancelled in the afternoon. A route that operates in the morning, will operate in the afternoon.

Any route cancellations will be posted on www.nsts.ca, in the Delays & Cancellations portal.

Please make sure you know your child’s four-digit bus route number. You can access your child’s route number through the www.nsts.ca, Parent Portal. (see attached instructions)

Please sign-up to receive alerts for route delays and cancellations through the NSTS.ca Parent Portal.  This will send you a direct email if there is a service disruption on your child’s route. There is a BusPlanner Delays App you can toggle to your child’s school board and school to view Delays & Cancellations. (see attached instructions)

In advance of Monday, January 17, 2022, parents are encouraged to prepare for the potential of service disruptions, to check for delays and cancellations daily that may impact your child's route and to have a plan in the event a service disruption impacts your child's route.

Process for Communication

NSTS and Bus companies will be up early to evaluate staffing for each school day. By 6:00 a.m. any routes that cannot operate due to staffing shortages will be posted as Cancelled on the NSTS website, www.nsts.ca, Delay & Cancellations.

By 6:00 a.m. if there are route cancellations, NSTS will post a general message to NSTS website, post to Twitter (@NiagaraSTS), update the general NSTS voicemail and email local media outlets prompting families to visit the NSTS website, www.nsts.ca, Delays & Cancellations.

If NSTS and a bus company identify a route cancellation that may last for several days, this route will be posted on the NSTS website, www.nsts.ca, with the expected date the route will be reinstated.

Route delays will be posted as per normal practice on the NSTS website, www.nsts.ca, Delays & Cancellations.
